Design work at Greenwood Plaza, was completed end of 2012 by Crone Partners Architects and Interiors. This involved a number of upgrades to the centre including; new respite seating, new ceiling treatments and new lighting designs. The new ceiling and lighting treatments cover 7 major zones in the centre, helping to rejuvenation the existing shopping Plaza, in need of modernisation.

Crone designed the ceilings to use environmentally friendly materials, such as, the plywood louvres that form a curving, directional spine at the centre. The ridge line of the vertical louvres is constantly changing, creating the idea of movement, ever prevalent in the daily movements of commuters from North Sydney Station through the concourse level.

The existing lights in the centre were replaced with highly energy efficient LED lights, providing improved LUX levels for shoppers and providing Energy Saving Certificates for the client. The futuristic lights are located at key entries to the mall and were developed to highlight the main entrancies to the concourse level. Construction of the ceilings was over a 3 month period.

The design of the upper level lighting, looked at creating an artificial atrium light, similar to the existing atriums at the centre. Through the existing atrium skylights you see the branches of large trees through the glass roof. The lighting is connected to a computer system allowing the light feature, termed the “birds nest” to change colour or work on a programmed loop of colours. The lighting system and design was developed through a collaborative design approach, with Crone Partners, Mirvac, Barrisol, Mainbrace and Philips Lighting.

180B comes to life

After months of construction work in the basement levels of 180B the building is finally coming alive. The amazing truss structure that spans the railway lines in Brisbane is exposed at ground level and can be seen over 5 levels of the podium. Hyder Structures worked closely with Crone Partners to design an innovative structure that spans the railway tunnels with diagonal bracing and uses the core itself to straddle the railway lines.

The unique side core commercial office building is 34 levels in height and has over 60,000m2 of NLA with large open floor plates.

It is a thrill to see this image provided by Watpac Constructions and see the shape of the office floor plate coming out of the ground, having worked on the project since its early conception in 2008. Crone Partners won the project in a Design Competition and have enjoyed working collaboratively in the design process with our client Daisho.

I’m also impressed seeing our site Architect Nick Grbavac giving good scale in his yellow hard hat in front of one of these amazing columns. Nice shot Nick.

vertical garden living in the heart of AYALA Centre

Ayala Land Premier’s Garden Towers Residential Development lives in the heart of Makati’s retail district. Crone Partners design for 2 towers, 61 and 53 levels respectively and housing approximately 680 residences in 2012.

Key environmental features of the design, endemic to the Crone Design Methodology include; Flexible sun rooms, sky gardens, green walls, extensive landscaped amenity areas and spectacular Garden Lobby Drop-off.

The photograph below shows early ground works on site, due for completion 2017. The first phase of the development will see Tower 1 and podium built, with a total GFA of 60,000m2 and 320 apartments.

renzo piano’s “the shard” in london

Renzo Piano’s “The Shard” in London is an inspirational and awe inspiring piece of modern art and architecture.

Located in the London bridge Quarter, adjacent to the Burrows Market, the scale of the project is massive at 87 levels. Over 306m tall the building is the tallest building in the European Union and was jointly developed by Stellar Property and the state of Qatar. The Shard started construction in 2009 and reached practical completion in November 2012. The building is set to open in June 2014 and the viewing platform is open to the public now.

From the 72nd level viewing platform you can see the start of the “New London Architecture” government initiative, changing the face of the city, by promoting high rise buildings in London. The Shard, the Transistor, Gherkin and Cheese Grater to name a few of the modern buildings popping up in London. Over 200 high rise buildings are planned for London, 80% of which will be residential buildings. The initiative promotes higher density living in London and new public domain experiences.

What is even more impressive about The Shard, is Renzo’s understanding of architectural details. Beautiful glass curtain wall facade systems, float delicately in space at the edges of the building. Corners of the building are light and recessive. The edge of the building is detailed with articulated joints and sleeved stainless steel pipes which frame the building with colour and light.

arya residences – greening the fort

Crone Partners designed the boutique residential development, Arya Residences for client ArthaLand in 2010. Since then, the building has won multiple design awards, most recently for best Architectural Design, at the East Asia Property Awards 2013.

Arya Residences, is the first Green Rated residential building in the Philippines, with both LEED gold and BERDE ratings to its expanding portfolio.

Walking around the site last week, we took the opportunity to take photographs of the high-rise residential building under construction in Fort Bonifacio City. This is a shot of Tower 1, due for handover in April 2014.
