Austereo moved to its current premises at the World Square site in Sydney, in 2006. The building is located at the corner of George Street and Goulburn Streets in “Building B”, to the South West of the site. The World Square precinct includes offices, residential and retail uses, as well as providing a piazza space in-between the buildings, for use by the public.
For those that haven’t heard of Austereo, it is a radio station worth $700m, responsible for two major radio stations brands; MMM and 2Day FM. The total Fitout costs for the project was approx. $10m.
Crone Partners, who were responsible for the World Square Master Plan site, were invited to design an interconnecting stair in the Austereo Fitout and a rooftop amenities area. The works included; a stair that connected 3 levels of the tenancy, glass lift, toilets and kitchen provisions, as well as a multi-purpose room on the rooftop, that could be used for special events.
The interconnecting stair provides a space where employees can interact in a dynamic environment. The steel stair uses a steel channel stringer and balustrades, set-out perpendicular to the stringers. Patch fitting connect the glass to the balustrades and a 50mm diam Stainless Steel handrail borders the edges. The treads are finished with a dark grey rubber finish and set in a Stainless Steel pan, that spans between the stringers creating a clean and simple soffit. The colour wall to the side of the stair is a feature of the space. The wall is made from Barrisol and the lighting is connected to a computer system, allowing the colour’s to change on demand or on a loop system. The “communication” stair encourages people to use the stair to travel between floors, instead of using the lift. Eco friendly!
The Ernst & Young Centre, is a 32 Level commercial office tower and signature building on the World Square site, located on George Street, in Sydney. The tower has 68,000m2 of NLA and construction was complete in January 2005, by Brookfield Multiplex Constructions. The building achieved a 4.5 Star NABERS energy rating and is a PCA “Grade A” office building. The tower has an approximate construction cost of $270m. The Ernst & Young Centre was the result of the City’s Design Excellence Competition won by Crone Partners.
World Square is a mixed use development incorporating a retail centre, public piazza, residential and commercial uses. The World Square site was a hole in the ground for over 10 years and construction stopped in the 90’s, due to financial constraints. Re-use of the existing structure and lift core was an important consideration in the new design of the office tower. Development of the Ernst & Young tower was the catalyst for the urban renewal of the World Square District.
One of the key features of the design, is a unique glazed external stair, that forms an active circulation spine for the tenants of the building. The stair not only serves as an important egress route, but is an interconnecting stair for multiple level tenants, thus encouraging people interaction between floors. At night, the lighting to the stair provides a dramatic glow to the tower, highlighting the building on the city skyline.
I don’t know about you but I am a huge fan of the design of the Apple store in George Street Sydney. Time and effort has been spent on the detailing of not only the entry facade but the glass feature stair that connects the floors at the back of the building. It is a beautiful stair. The treads span from wall to wall made from 50mm thick solid glass spanning approximately 2.4m. The treads are connected to the wall by minuscule stainless steel patch fittings removing the need for stringers. The open risers add to the transparency of the stair allowing light to filter through the incredibly lightweight structure and create soft shadows on the stark aluminium composite walls. The stair not only looks good but it encourages the visitor to use the stair rather than riding the lift to the other levels. Nice work by the architect! Does anyone know who designed it?
