Last week, Crone Architects and SJB Architects chaired a Champions of Change (CoC) morning tea at the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter) in Tusculum.
The inaugral event will be a regular session whereby the CoC leaders, invite architects, partners and their children to a morning tea session to discuss Gender Equity in the Workplace. The CoC members gave an update on the Champions of Change program and discussed collectively the difficulties for parents re-entering the work place after extended leave. The sessions will be an open forum to discuss Gender Equity and the Agreed Actions proposed by the CoC group. These include the following key areas;

Plan Careers Early
On Ramp, Off Ramp and everything else in between: Enabling successful career breaks and part-time work
Reflect on Personal Leadership Style using the Leadership Shadow model
Launch a Panel Pledge campaign within Architecture
We had a great turnout on Monday of approximately 25 mums and dads and prams. There were quiet a few vocal parents and young ones who contributed to the discussions which made the morning tea very productive.
Representing Crone architects was Erica Teicher, Eva Ponsati and Anna Van Hees. Anna provided great insight into her experiences having recently come back from a parental leave break.
Crone provided a briefing on the firms commitment to Diversity in the office and highlighted areas they would like to improve in the future.

Crone recently engaged a photographer to take aerial photographs of 180 Daisho, a 60,000m2 commercial office tower located in Ann Street, Brisbane. 180 Daisho is a 34 level, 6 Star Green Star office tower with a striking super graphic of the Brisbane River designed to the north east facade.
180 Daisho is ambitious, gutsy and a highly intelligent building. The tower will be Brisbane’s first, 6 Star Green Star V3 certified office building and is aiming for a 5.5 star NABERS Energy rating. This is the highest sustainability rating attainable through the Green Building Council of Australia’s rating system and described as World Leadership. Crone worked closely with Floth Engineers to design a very efficient, world class, sustainable building.
The buildings facade features a dramatic motif of the Brisbane River which is highly recognisable from a number of vantage points throughout the city and becomes a theme throughout the development.
The structural design is innovative. By utilising a side core to the office floor plate, we were able to straddle the Brisbane railway lines that run directly under the site. Crone worked with Arcadis structural engineers to develop the structural system, which uses in part, a series of large diagonal trusses to support the typical floor plates. This strategic thinking helped unlock the opportunities of the site. The resulting floor plates are regular in shape, open planned, saturated with light and with spectacular views of the city.
Due for completion at the end of 2015, the Arya Residences public spaces are coming to life. The canopy was designed to be a protected space from the harsh environment of Manila, a place to gather, eat, cool down and enjoy a quiet respite from the bustleing city life of Fort Bonifacio in the Philippines.
True to the original design intent, award winning developer and Green advocate, the Arthaland Corporation have pushed the boundaries where other developers may not have had the courage. Our collaborative vision, complimented by a focus on sustainability, saw the project achieve a LEED Gold certification and selected as a BERDE pilot project through the Philippine Green Building Council. The first Green Certified Residential Condominium development in the Philippines.
The Concept Design for the James Bond House was originally designed in Oct 2014. The brief was an architects dream come true. Unlimited budget, challenging sloping site in Cebu, young edgy and stylish clients with the desire to create a modern, minimalist box for their home. The resulting design is in stark contrast to the Spanish villa vernacular of the Cebu Hills area but sensitive to the topography of the land and the environment. From the projects onset, the clients were on-board with our vision, excited by the design and loved the architectural style that we were proposing. It made you feel pretty damn good about being an architect and thoroughly enjoying the collaborative Design Process. Typically, this kind of smooth design process, just doesn’t happen. But sometimes dreams don’t fully come true and need a little bit of Value Management. Not a bad thing in the scheme of things but essential to turning the vision into reality.
We were very happy to hear this week the project is forging ahead and following review of the local architects drawings pleased to see the Design Intent was respected in the modifications to the Schematic Design.
In 2014 I was in Europe for a Light & Build Expo in Frankfurt and decided since not often this far away from home, I should visit London. I really wanted to have a look at the Gherkin and Shard buildings in real life. To my surprise, I stumbled on a number of interesting buildings by internationally acclaimed architects, as I worked around a changing, grey and wet city. I started at the London Centre for the Built Environment, located at the Building Centre at 26 Store Street London. The Building Centre’s exhibition was called New London Architecture, explaining through models, imagery and precinct studies, how a new campaign of densification of the city was being promoted in the city. A major change historically for London, new guide lines would allow tall buildings in key regions of the city to be developed, for the benefit of the community.
“Since the Millennium, London has witnessed the construction of a series of tall buildings that have transformed the city’s skyline – from the Gherkin, which gained planning permission in 2000, through to the Shard, which opened in 2012, to the Leadenhall Building and 20 Fenchurch Street which are completing this year.
